There are two types of BOTOX® treatments. BOTOX® Cosmetic is used for aesthetic treatments, unlike regular BOTOX® which is only used therapeutically. While the first is used to relax facial muscles to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, the other is used to relieve pain (e.g., migraines and other headaches, pain due to teeth grinding/jaw clenching/TMJ, etc.). Women and men seeking a more relaxed and youthful appearance are candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. But how does it work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults. According to the makers of the BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment, there is significant science behind it. It is backed by over 16 years of clinical studies. It was evaluated and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a safe and effective biologic product for therapeutic use in 1989, and in 2002 for some cosmetic use (i.e., for frown lines between the eyebrows); it was approved for expanded cosmetic use in 2013 (i.e., for “crow’s feet” wrinkles around the corners of the eyes). Prescription medicine is the most widely researched and studied aesthetic treatment of its kind.

The minimally invasive, in-office treatment consists of injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic into specific muscles of the face, to address some wrinkles, furrows, and folds in the skin. (The number of injections differs for each area of the face.) It works by blocking certain chemical nerve signals and preventing muscle contractions, without any incisions or use of general anesthesia. “BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.” The quick and easy treatment results in noticeably reduced fine lines, usually within 24 to 48 hours of receiving it. The outcomes can vary, but the effects of the injections can last up to four months; further injections can be given when those of the first set diminishes.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. There are some possible side effects, but the treatment is relatively safe when performed correctly. The BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment should only be performed by a qualified medical professional.
